STANDARD 7

Students engage collaboratively in authentic inquiry during ongoing units of study.

Impact Narrative:

At Centennial Academy, scholar-led inquiry is at the heart of our school's learning and culture. Thoughtful and detailed planning by our teachers to create strong project-based learning units provides an authentic inquiry based approach to the Georgia Standards of Excellence.

Every PBL unit begins with a provocation, an Entry Event, that meets the inquisitive nature of our scholars and evokes questions. We then integrate learning moments through standards-based curriculum, further giving scholars the opportunity to research, support their thoughts, hold authentic discussions, support their reasonings, and practice self-reflection and assessment.

As scholars continue to collaborate and discuss their findings, learning becomes authentic: they feel ownership and cultivate a genuine thirst to learn. Scholars continue to refer back to the driving question in order to solve the problem presented in the project.

This inquiry process could not take place without an emphasis on the Design Thinking Process. By using this process to focus on STEAM education, teachers become facilitators, and scholars learn to collaboratively discuss and solve real-world issues.
