STANDARD 14

Students develop STEAM skills and cross-cutting competencies that support workforce readiness.

  Impact Narrative:

We envision Centennial Academy scholars and educators as high achievers, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and ethical leaders in a global society.

A commitment to EXCELLENCE in critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity embodies what it means to be a HERO at Centennial Academy! In every unit of study and throughout our project-based learning, educators are purposeful and meaningful to point out when these specific attributes are seen in scholars. Through our innovative spaces (Makerspace, Aquaponics Labitat, Computer-Science Lab, STEAM Lab), scholars are provided opportunities to develop the learner profile attributes competencies necessary to support workforce readiness.

For example, when working in collaborative groups, a teacher may ask a scholar to share when they witnessed another scholar be caring or open-minded to a new idea. By asking scholars to share when they see these attributes in one another, scholars are also able to see these attributes in themselves.

Our 8th graders, who are referred to as Emerging Legends, participate in apprenticeships each school year. Through the Apprenticeship Program, small businesses and corporations have a hand in shaping our future workforce. Scholars have worked with Home Depot, Coca Cola, Delta Airlines, and several other Atlanta businesses. They observe meetings, as well as receive career advice and feedback on their resumes. This program allows our scholars to view first-hand the connections of their STEAM experiences to STEAM-based professions.

In addition to these attributes being meaningfully discussed and present in our units of study and project-based learning, we also take time to celebrate scholars in each class who embody them. Every month, educators vote on a scholar in their class who best represents what it means to be a Hero!  On Leadership Days we celebrate our "Heroes of the Month" by having their family members join us for a special awards and breakfast ceremony. Scholars also are presented to the whole school during our Leadership program. By highlighting specific scholars who demonstrate these skills, we are able to encourage other scholars and set examples in every grade level.
