STANDARD 1
School/program provides equitable opportunities for students to engage in high-quality STEAM learning.
Impact Narrative:
All scholars at Centennial Academy are provided equitable opportunities to participate in high-quality STEAM learning through project-based learning units, and after-school opportunities. Our scholars, including those with disabilities and English Language Learners who typically receive instruction outside of the classroom, receive daily STEAM instruction.
In order to provide high-quality, critical-thinking STEAM education into the classroom, several of our teachers have Georgia Gifted and Talented, Math, and Science endorsements. In 2016, our teachers received their math and science endorsements; we value the ability to provide our scholars with high-quality enriched interdisciplinary learning.
During the Covid-19 virtual learning year, Centennial’s scholars had opportunities for normalcy through various STEAM experiences, including virtual STEAM-based learning lessons. The iCurate PBL showcase transformed into a virtual platform to allow scholars to showcase their projects virtually with stakeholders. STEAM investigations continued for all scholars despite having to pivot to virtual instruction all school year.
By focusing on providing equitable opportunities, our scholars are equipped with hands-on, standards-based inquiry. During the 2021 Summer Innovation Academy (S.I.A.), we partnered with The Ascent Project to provide our scholars with daily STEAM enrichment. This learning support structure and belief system throughout the school year and summer prepares our scholars for their future careers by becoming proactive learners.
